पुणे तिथे काय उणे !

असे  म्हणतात की जर आपण एखाद्या शहरात आपल्या आयुष्याचा बहुतांश वेळ घालवला तर ते शहर आपल्याला जगाच्या पाठीवर सर्वांत बेस्ट शहर आहे असे  वाटते. त्याची तुलना आपण कुठल्याही शहराशी करायला तयार होत नाही. माझेदेखील असेच काही मत आहे, ते म्हणजे पुण्यासाठी. सर्व गुण संपन्न असलेले हे शहर आज  सर्व क्षेत्रात आघाडीवर आहे. भौगोलिक, ऐतिहासिक आणि सांस्कृतिक वारसा लाभलेल्या या शहराची वाटचाल आज मेट्रो सिटीच्या दिशेने होत आहे. एकेकाळी "पेन्शनर्स पॅराडाईज" म्हणून विख्यात असलेले पुणे आज "आयटी हब" आणि "ऑटोमोबाईल हब" म्हणून ओळखले जात आहे. 

पुणे हे दक्खनच्या पठारावरील एक ऐतिहासिक शहर पुनवडी नावाने प्रसिद्ध होते. सभोवताली असलेल्या टेकड्या आणि दोन नद्यांनी सुजलाम झालेल्या पुण्यावर निसर्गाने देखील भरभरून उधळण केली आहे. पेशवाई आल्यानंतर पुणे समृद्धीच्या दिशेने धावू लागले. सतरा पेठा असलेलं पुणं एका सुनियोजित शहराचे उत्तम उदाहरण झाले. पेशवाई बांधकाम शैली पुण्यातल्या वड्यांवर ठळकपणे उमटून दिसते. शनिवारवाडा आणि विश्रामबागवाडा हे पुणेरी बांधकाम शैलींचे उत्तम नमुने आजही पंच-तारांकित हॉटेल्सच्या इंटिरियर्सना  इन्स्पायर करतात. 

 मी पुण्यात शिक्षणासाठी २०१२ साली आलो आणि इथल्या प्रत्येक गोष्टीकडे पॉझिटिव्हली पाहायला लागलो. हळूहळू पुणे एक्स्प्लोर करता करता मीही "पॅशनेट पुणेकर'' झालो. सुदैवाने मला पुण्याच्या मध्यवर्ती ठिकाणी असलेल्या गुरुवार पेठेत राहण्याचे सौभाग्य लाभले. त्यामुळे टिपिकल पुणेरी लाईफस्टाईल अनुभवता आली. ती जगण्यास सुरवात झाली ती पहाटे उठून सायकलवर पर्वती-सारस  बागेत जाण्यापासून. दररोज सकाळी सायकलिंग करत पुणे दर्शन नित्याचे होत गेले. मग जोशी  वडेवाले, वैशाली चा मैसूर डोसा, कैफे गुडलक ची  बन-मस्का चाय स्वाभाविकच जिभेचे चोचले पुरवू लागले. साबुदाणा वडा असो की  बटाटा वडा, एक्स्ट्रा कोशिंबीर हट्टाने मागू लागलो.  रस्त्यात मध्येच बंद पडणारी पीएमटी बस चा खडतर प्रवास उबेर-ओला कॅब पेक्षा जास्त थ्रीलिंग वाटू लागला. रिक्षावाल्यांशी सुट्टे पैशांवरून शाब्दिक हुज्जत घालणारे पुणेकर मनोरंजक वाटू लागले. कलेची आवड देखील पुण्यापासून सुरु झाली, मग सवाई गंधर्व महोत्सव आणि पुणे फेस्टिवल न चुकता अटेंड करू लागलो. बालगंधर्व नाट्यमंदिरावर हँगआऊट करू लागलो. सिनेमाचा आनंद मल्टिप्लेक्स पेक्षा प्रभात, मंगला, निलायम आणि लक्ष्मी नारायण च्या स्टॉल सीट वर येऊ लागला.  गणपतीचे दहा दिवस म्हणजे जणू पुणे कार्निव्हलच. पुण्यात सबंध महाराष्ट्र लोटल्याचा अनुभव यायचा. शॉपिंग ची मजा कॅम्पमधल्या शनिवारच्या  ट्रॅफिक विरहित "वॉकिंग प्लाझा" पेक्षा दुसरीकडे कदाचित अनुभवताच येणार नाही. डोळ्यांची पारणे फेडणारी लक्ष्मी रोड ची लखलखाट कदािचत न्यू यॉर्कच्या वॉल स्ट्रीट समोर फिकी पडेल. 

 पुण्याचे आणखी एक वैशिष्टय म्हणजे इथली सामाजिक बांधिलकी. पुण्यात विविध जाती-धर्मांचे लोक सुखाने नांदतात. हिंदू, मुस्लिम, शिख बांधवांप्रमाणेच पारसी,ईरानी आणि यहुदी लोकांनादेखील पुणे आपलेसे वाटते. डेविड ओहेल सिनॅगॉग हे त्याचे उत्तम उदाहरण. लाखो परदेशी पर्यटक ओशो आश्रमास भेट देतात.  यामुळे पुणे खऱ्या अर्थाने एक कॉस्मोपॉलिटन शहर झाले आहे. मऱ्हाटमोळी परंपरा आजही पुण्याने जपली आहे. मराठी संस्कृती पुण्यात प्रकर्षाने जाणवते. 

दर्जेदार शिक्षण क्षेञात पुणे नेहमीच आघाडीवर राहीले आहे. विद्येचे माहेरघर किंवा ऑक्सफर्ड ऑफ द ईस्ट अशा व्याख्यांनी पुणे संबोधले जाते. पुणे विद्यापीठात शिक्षण घेणाऱ्या  परदेशी विद्यार्थ्यांच्या संख्येत लक्षणीय वाढ होत आहे. त्याबरोबर सिम्बायसिस सारखी अभिमत विद्यापीठे पुण्यात स्थापन झाली आणि ज्ञानगंगा पुण्यात वाहू लागली.

जुने पुणे आता हायटेक होऊ पाहत आहे. आयटी पार्कस् नी शहराचा चेहरामोहरा बदलून टाकला आहे. पुण्याला वेस्टर्न टच लागतोय. नाईट लाईफ पुणेकरांच्या जीवनशैलीत रुजू लागली आहे.पाश्चात्य जीवनशैली असलेल्या कोरेगाव पार्क, विमाननगर सारख्या उच्चभ्रु वस्ती विदेशी नागरीक पुण्यात राहाण्यासाठी निवडतात. सुसज्ज मॉल्समुळे जागतिक दर्जाचीे उत्पादने पुण्याच्या पुढ्यात येऊन पडले आहेत. लवासा, अमनोरा, मगरपट्टा सारख्या क्लस्टर टाऊनशिप्स पुण्यात साकारल्यामुळे  गृहनिर्मिती क्षेत्राला उत्तम मापदंड मिळाले आहे. मॅरियट, वेस्टिन सारख्या आलिशान हाँंटेल्स पुणेकरांच्या सेवेत रुजू झाल्या आहेत. विदेशी पर्यटकांना पूरक सोयीसुविधा देण्यासाठी पुणे सज्ज झाले आहे. इतिहासाच्या पाऊलखुणा आणि भविष्याचा वेध पुण्याने अचूक वेधले आहे. कदाचित प्रगतीचे हेच टॉनिक पुणे पीत आहे. पूर्ण भारतातील तरुण आज पुण्याकडे आकर्षित होत आहे. 

पाश्चात्य संस्कृतीसाठी इतके पोषक वातावरण असताना देखील पुण्याने आपल्या संस्कृतीशी नाळ जुळवून ठेवली आहे हे महत्त्वाचे. पुण्यात आजही महाराष्ट्र दर्शन घडते. विकासाचे आणि संस्कृती जतनाचे उत्तम मॉडेल म्हणजे पुणे. अशा या सर्व गुण संपन्न पुण्य नगरीबद्दल आवर्जून लिहिण्याचा मोह मला तरी कसा टाळता आला असता ?

The need for commitment to values in mass communication (media and journalism) and information technology (electronic and social media): a challenge

The liberty of expression is the driving force for any democracy. Mass media serves the purpose of expression of ideas, thoughts and speech. It is written, published, broadcasted or spoken form of communication that reaches a large audience. With the advent of technology, social media has augmented the mass media. We live in an era where we have an array of news channels, newspapers and radio channels. Today’s young generation has “socialized” on Facebook, Twitter and WhatsApp to share their ideas and creativity, making information going viral. India has seen a paradigm shift in recent general elections. The mass media had a lion’s share in this shift. It was regarded as India’s first social media election. Mass media had stimulated transparency in the Indian politics by exposing corruption scams through sting operations. Thus, our lives are influenced under the “mediated” culture. Today, unfortunately, the media has been commercialized to serve the interests of definite sections of the society. The power of people is at stake due to the vested interests of some bureaucrats. Voltaire has rightly quoted “With great power comes great responsibility”. The culture of India is the way of life of the Indian people. It has been governed by a several millennia old history. Indian culture is the amalgamation of several cultures. It is the birthplace of Hinduism, Buddhism, Jainism and Sikhism. Along with these, Islam, Christianity, Zoroastrianism and Judaism are also practiced with harmony. Their faith exists by virtue of their values. Values play an important role in the Indian society. The Indians are spiritual human beings. Their faith in God, the soul, karma and reincarnation are their greatest assets inherited from the Vedic culture. Their lives revolve round the virtues like mercy, austerity, purity, and truthfulness. These virtues, if applied, in our day to day activities will make our lives and businesses prosper. Mass media is nowhere an exception to these. Information technology has proved to be boon for mankind, by easing the work process. However, use of unfair means and editing the pictures and videos by media is spoiling its credibility. Communal violence and tensed situations arise out of such practices. The industry is leading towards the verge of destruction. Social media is growing as a new weapon to fuel these. The new generation is getting techno-savvy, which is an optimistic fact. Social media platforms offer users the opportunity to post their views. Information is shared at the lightning speed, without any barriers. Unfortunately, this speed of sharing knowledge is misused to ire a mass population and trigger public outrage. Commitment to our inherited values in mass media and information technology is the need of the hour. The ultimate aim of making profits is achieved by making false claims, which is going against the truth. However, truth always prevails as rightly said “Satyamev Jayate”. Someday, words will always come out from the depths of truth. Commitment to our core values help us do things we wouldn’t otherwise dream of doing. It doesn’t require that you lose yourself entirely, only that you temper your more selfish and petty urges and challenge yourself to rise above them. Commitment has the power to help you grow and to be a better person. The media must uphold the truth in reflecting the sufferings of the society and portray the right image. Showing compassion and empathy towards the people is another value, the mass media should practice. The media should “feel” the problems of the society as their own and follow-up accordingly and not for the sake of Television Rating Point (TRP). Public interest must be safeguarded by the media and not the political interest. If the mass media abides by the values inherited from our culture, the industry is sure to soar high. It will impact on the nation’s progress, by promoting transparency in the system. Our media is the representative of our country’s international image. The more it adheres to the Indian values, the more the world will believe in our culture and practice it. The media is believed act as the “Voice of India” in the world and reflect its fair image. Social media too reflects our youth power. If the youth unites and creates national awareness to promote a social cause, our future will be bright for sure. Let us use the power of mass media and social media constructively to see the change we wish to see.

Who'll lead INDIA ? Fingers Crossed

 This is a season of festivity in the world's one of the largest democracies. The ambience is filled with claims and offerings made by the wannabe PM of the nation. The ruling ones are engaged in highlighting their deeds of progress. The citizens are being entertained everyday by the clashes of views between the "big faces" of the concerned political parties. The news channels are bombarded with opinion polls, debates and discussions. The commercial breaks no more endorse soaps and shampoos. They have replaced younsters and villagers endorsing their leaders. 

On the other hand, voters are encouraged by the NGOs to participate actively in this game changing scenario. Some even threaten to boycott the elections. Politicos are engaged to budge them. Malls and multiplexes are flooded with discounts and offers for the "inked fingers". Perhaps, the entire nation is concerned about the future like never before (not even during the anticipated disaster of 2012). Lanes of the towns are wrapped in the flexes and banners of the REPRESENTATIVES. Slum residents are greeted and gifted so frequently like never before. The hottest celebrity have come up with her own party and campaining with a green chilly and green attire. Chaotic situations arised from missing names in the final voters' list. What has compelled India to think differently?

The country has shown a rise in voting in all the phases. Everything has come to a stand still now. The umpire's decision is pending. All the eyes glued to May 16. Let's see who can break the ice.

 

 

Monsoon Quite Soon !

While the rest of Maharashtra has been fighting with the drought, here's a good news.

Its quite pleasant weather since morning in Pune with a transition in climate from hot and dry to a cool & humid one. Misty showers were experienced during the dawn which later faded as the day progressed.
It has been a long wait for such a comfort. Hope everything gets fixed at the earliest. Rain brings the message of revitalizing ourselves. Let's pamper ourselves in its soothing showers for there is nothing more pure than rainwater.
Come on ! Let's drench ourselves in the pouring rain. Let the naughty child within you emerge out. There's no enjoyment than being childish and let our mind do whatever it wants to. Dance in it to hide the tears in your eyes. Let the rain carry your pain to rejuvenate life. Make this moment special and capture it in your soul. Years later the same rain will remind you of some special moments and take away our sorrows.

Imagine a life without excitement, curiosity and a craze a to explore.
Monotonous, dull, lethargic for me to imagine. Are we born to have limitations??? Certainly NOT !!!
I believe in facing thrills and adventurous to keep ourselves charged. Adventures need not always be associated with rock climbings or cleft diving, it can be some sort of excursions in our vicinity.

A week-long hectic schedule really sucks. Why not dedicate our weekends to our choices?
India is a land of myriad cultures and ethnicities so is the scope of our explorations. It has snow-clad Himalayan ranges in the north to deep blue Indian Ocean in the south. It has hot, arid deserts in the west to hilly terrains in the east. It has beaches, rivers, lagoons, forests, ghats, waterfalls- all contributing for a perfect holiday destination.
